The return of the mixtape
Suddenly, mixtapes are the new ‘new thing’. In an age of endless digital music on tap, both Mixwit and Muxtape are attempting to bring back that magic of making mixtape compilations for your friends. Both methods are pretty nice looking, but ultimately I’m a sucker for the retro look of Mixwit’s dirty tatty tapes. Note: for people under the age of 30 or so, find out what cassette tapes and mixtapes actually are.
“If the best band in the world doesn’t want a part of us, I’m not sure what’s left for this business.”
Radiohead have announced the release of their new album ‘In Rainbows’ on the 10th October. They’re doing it on their own without a record label as a pay-as-much-as-you-want download and a fancy expensive CD/vinyl/book behemoth. This is pretty fundamental stuff: the record companies know it, and are scared of it. Time (which features the above quote from an anonymous exec) and many others are discussing what it all means.
No Music Day
Bill Drummond has announced today, 21st November, as No Music Day.
Thom Yorke’s Eraser mural

Stanley Donwood, regular Radiohead designer/artist type, has been busy in the Ladbroke Grove area. He’s created a mural on the XL Recordings offices to mark the release of Thom Yorke’s Eraser album. Take a look at some of the pictures I took at ateaseweb.com.
