Since I’m not a big fan of Christmas food - from wherever it is in the world - this is the only traditional Portuguese festive treat I really like.
1 baguette loaf of bread • 500ml milk • 4 eggs • 1 lemon peel • 2 cinnamon sticks • Frying oil • Sugar and cinnamon to sprinkle (4 parts of sugar to 1 part of cinnamon)
1. The loaf of bread must be dry (for at least 2 days). Cut into oblique slices, to make them longer, about 1 finger thick. • 2. Boil the milk with the lemon peel, the cinnamon sticks and add sugar to taste. Pour the milk into a tray and dip in the slices of bread. • 3. Beat the eggs. Squeeze gently the slices of bread, dip them into the beaten eggs and fry them in the hot oil, turning them on both sides until they are golden. • 4. After frying, drain the slices and sprinkle them with the mixture of sugar and cinnamon.
